Castellated Purlins – A Strategic Alternative to OWSJ

The Ask :

Deliver a structural steel solution for four separate logistics facilities totaling 1.6 million sq. ft., with roof systems requiring 56-foot (17m) spans. The designs needed to accommodate sprinkler systems and service routing, while meeting tight occupancy deadlines.

The Problem :

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the supply of Open Web Steel Joists (OWSJ) was severely disrupted, with extended lead times threatening our clients’ project schedules and tenant commitments. A conventional approach was no longer viable, and a fast, reliable alternative was urgently needed.

The Team:

TSWL’s in-house engineering and manufacturing teams collaborated to develop and implement an innovative in-house solution, leveraging our state-of-the-art automation equipment and extensive structural expertise.

The Solution :

TSWL responded with a custom-designed castellated purlin system, delivering:

  • 3,300 castellated purlins using automated manufacturing processes to ensure speed and consistency.
  • A 50% reduction in lead time compared to traditional OWSJ supply.
  • A design tailored to integrate sprinkler systems and service lines, ensuring functional and code-compliant installations.
  • Seamless delivery across each of the four logistics facilities and meeting all contractual occupancy schedules without compromise.

This project showcases TSWL’s agility and depth as a full solutions provider, capable of engineering and delivering alternatives under pressure—without sacrificing quality or timelines.
